LIFEBOAT SERVICE
RECORD YEAR ON BRITISH
COAST
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, January 3.
During 1938, which has been remarkable for severe storms around the British Isles, the lifeboat service played a part in saving from destruction more vessels than ever before in its 115 years of existence.
There was a record number of launchings—namely 483—and the number of vessels saved from destruction was 88. In other ways 250 vessels and boats were assisted.
The number of lives rescued from shipwreck during 1938 was 673—149 more than in 1937 —and of these 546 were rescued by lifeboats and 127 by shore boats.
Twenty-seven medals for gallantry in connection with rescues were awarded. Twelve new motor lifeboats were completed during the year, and 25 are being built for launching in 1939.
