REFUGEE PROBLEM

U.S. ATTITUDE MADE CLEAR

(Received January 5, 10.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, January 4.

The Assistant Secretary of State (Mr. Sumner Welles) announced that the Ambassador in Rome (Mr. Phillips) communicated to Signor Mussolini the attitude of the United States towards the refugee problem, at the same time seeking the Duce's views on other matters.

Informed circles believe that Mr. Phillips may also have asked Signor Mussolini;to use his good offices with Herr Hitler to provide orderly emigration from Germany and to co-operate with the international committee.
