THE FIRST WAITS
In the reign of King Edward IV waits were attached to.the king's court. They were dressed in blue gowns with red sleeves and red caps to match. Apart from "piping * the watch," their duties were to guard the palace against fire and thieves. Their attendance at. the Court. earned them about - 4£d per day. This is the origin of the modern practice.. of bands of "minstrels" singing carols outside houses on Christmas morning.
