THEIR DAY OUT

APPRENTICES' SIX WINS

The apprentice riders had their opportunity to show their worth on the final day.of the Wairarapa Meeting on Monday, and six out of the eight races were won by the articled boys. Generally the riding was quite good, for the course is a very tricky one. the only incident marring the day being the falling of two horses in ( the t hack sprint. '

One mistake tljat was common was tor the less-experienced riders to make a dash forward along the outer of the field on that short furlong stretch before the turn into the straight. Such a move is very risky on this course, unless a horse is particularly brilliant, as it means soing right off the track entering the straight Even some riders who should by now know better allowed themselves to be trapped more than once into this blunder. . The best return for the day was that of T. R. George's apprentice, W. Doyle, who secured two wins on Jeanne and another on Dorak. Another of George's apprentices, A. E. Bennet, brought Dungarvan home to creditapie victory in the principal event of the day. and he might have gained a .further success if Daregam -had made a better beginning from the rail position in the final event, the hack fave furlongs. George's third apprentice riding at the meeting, A. W. Sim, who is on the heavy side, had only one mount, Batsham, on whom he was third to his other two stablemates, Dorak and Daregain. in the. novice eVln6ther success for a Trentham apprentice was that gained by F. Power, who rode Mother-in-LaW to victory in the opening event on the final day. Power is attached to H. Pritchard s stable, and this was his first winner He rides work well and requires only the confidence of experience to be a useful lad in the saddle. c u rt ,,,ri The riding over the holidays should have served as excellent education for several of the Trentham, boys. At present these lads are doing nearly all the riding work on the track, and with most of them it is only a case of race experience for them to be winning race 9. . Among others who have already ridden a winner or two are a*. Sagar, L. T. Nesbitt, R; A, Hawkmgs and R. Hawes, and when their real, chance comes B. L. Hitchen V. Bevan, A. G. P. Newnham, G. Flood, b. v. Robinson, J. Nicholson, and a. Foster should also be capable ctf riding with success. Ani opportunity for some of these boys will be afforded in the Apprentices' Plate at Trentham this month.
