SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

An anticyclone still covers the North Tasman Sea and northern New Zealand, but a shallow depression. moving rapidly from the west had crossed the southern half of the South Island by this morning.

The weather for the most part was fair to fine, but became overcast last night in western and southern districts of the South Island with the approach of the depression, and by this morning the overcast area had extended to beyond Cook Strait. Some rain fell in western and southern districts, but the falls were mainly light. Fresh sea breezes blew just in coastal districts, while elsewhere moderate to fresh winds between west and southwest predominated but changed overnight to north-west in the Cook Strait area. Another cool change has occurred in the south, but otherwise the temperatures have been mild to warm.
