"I have been at sea all my life since I was a'boy of 15, and it is going to be strange without the familiar Surroundings of my ship. I am very proud of the Wanganella, the commodore ship of the Huddart Parker fleet, because I brought her out here, and the Westralia before that.*'

Born in Newcastle, New South "Wales, Captain Bates made his first visit to New Zealand as ship's boy in the wooden barque G. M. Tucker. In the past 32 years he has been master of 22 ships, having been in charge of the Wanganella for the past six years.
