CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS

AUCKLAND, This Day,

The North Island croquet championship tournament opened today on various Auckland greens in-perfect- conditions. There are' fen entries- in the open championship and 31 in the women's championship. Handicap contests commenced today and championship games will begin early next week.

ASHBURTON, This Day,

The South Island croquet championship tournament opened today in fine but overcast weather. The Mayor (Dr. Miller) declared the tourney open. Entries for the handicaps and the championships are very satisfactory. Championship events are expected to start on Saturday. There are five entries for tHe open championship, thirteen for the women's championship, and sixteen for the doubles championship.

Hundreds of tons of sand bought by London business firms in the recent crisis have been sent to the Children's Beach at the Tower.
