SMART PASSAGE

WAIPAWA'S FAST TRIP

The fastest passage she -has ever made to New Zealand was recorded on Monday by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion motor-ship Waipawa, which arrived at Auckland, from Liverpool. The ship, averaging about 17 knots, took 28 days 23 hours for the trip. Leaving Liverpool at 4 a.m. on Sunday, December 4, the vessel experienced moderate weather throughout the trip, and arrived at Auckland about 4 p.m„ on Monday. She brought eleven passengers, five of whom disembarked at Auckland, and 10,000 tons of general merchandise. x

The Waipawa, which is a sister-ship to the other "Wai" ships in the company's fleet (the Wairangi, the Waiwera, the new Waimarama, and the Waiotira now on order) has a creditable list of travelling achievements against her name. In 1935 she made a record passage from Port Chalmers to London in 30 days 6 hours 14 minutes, the distance of 11,226 sea miles being travelled in the actual sea time of 28 days 4 hours 38 minutes, at an average speed of 16.59- knots. She made the trip from Wellington to Auckland, a distance of about 551 miles, In 1937, in 1 day 9 hours 55 minutes. The Waipawa, which is four years old, has made numerous other passages in exceptionally smart times.
