THE SEGRE FRONT
REBEL CLAIMS
FALL OF ARTESA IMMINENT
(Received January 4, 1 p.m.)
BURGOS, January 3
The nationalists claim to have reached the right bank of the Segre River and to be within rifle-range of Artesa, the fall of which is stated to be imminent. The retreating republicans blew up bridges over the Segre. It is admitted that republican forces are still holding up the legionnaires, who have been almost stationary for the last four days on a line from the Alps to Cogull. General Franco's troops claim to have reached a position in the extreme south dominating the road leading to Revs, near Tarragona. They also claim that since the offensive began they have occupied 494 square miles of territory, captured over 16,200 prisoners, and brought down 80 republican planes. Barcelona admits the rebel gains in the south but claims that the enemy is now held up in difficult hilly terrain. It is estimated that the nationalists fiave a total of 600 planes along the Segre front.
