FIERCE SYDNEY FIRE
MIRACULOUS ESCAPES
SYDNEY, January 3
A fierce fire, fed by stocks of matches and paper and tons of chlorate of potash, damaged, two factories and workshops in the suburb of Waterloo today.
The fire started on the premises of Phillip and Son, printers and bookbinders, spread to a match factory, and severely damaged the contents of two shops. Explosions were frequent and scores of windows in neai'by houses were smashed.
Firemen had miraculous escapes from falling walls and flying debris. The damage is estimated at £50,000.
