FAIR TO FINE
MILD TEMPERATURES
Special forecast for Wellington:— Winds soon backing to the north again and freshening tomorrow. Weather fair to fine and mild.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing 24 hours, is for winds. between west and south-west. These will be light tb moderate, in force, but winds will gradually turn to the north again and about and south of Cook Strait will freshen. The weather for the most part will be fair to fine, but scattered rain "will develop later, however, in . the far south-west and will gradually extend to western and southern districts of the South Island. In the south temperatures will be cool but rising, while elsewhere they will be mild to warm.
The _ anticyclone which has been centred over the North Island is moving away to the east. A weak depression has advanced from the southwest. This crossed most of the South Island last night, and at 9 a.m. today its northern extension was located in the Cook Strait-Taranaki area. In passing it caused some rain in most western districts, but falls were only light, ten points at Greymouth being the highest total recorded. EaJt of the main ranges and in the Auckland peninsula the weather has remained fine. In the latter area light to moderate southerly to south-westerly winds have prevailed, but elsewhere strong north-westerlies or westerlies were blowing yesterday, gale force being reached at times about Cook Strait. Winds, however, decreased overnight, and have turned to the south-west again with the passing of the depression. Temperatures have been very warm east of the ranges, but in the South Island they were cool again this morning.
Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy but fine, a light sputh-westerly wind freshening and becoming strong in the afternoon. Cloud increased overnight and the weather this morning was overcast with a light south-west-erly still blowing. Yesterday's maximum, and minimum temperatures were 69.4 and 53.5 degrees respectively.
In Wellington it was cloudy but fine, nine hours of bright sunshine being recorded. The northerly gale which blew in the morning gradually decreased in force during the afternoon and by midnight the wind was light. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 67 and 55.2 degrees. A light northerly was blowing at 9 a.m. today and the weather was fine, but the wind about 11.30 a.m. changed to a light southerly without affecting the weather.
Christchurch had an overcast morning with a light northerly wind. A strong north-westerly blew in the afternoon and the weather was fine and hot, the maximum temperature being 79.6 degrees and the minimum 46.5 degrees. About 8 p.m. yesterday the wind turned to the south-west, but by this morning it was back again to the north-east,, the weather being fine and cool.
Dunedin too had an overcast morning, yesterday, the wind being light and rather variable. It cleared during the afternoon, however, the wind becoming- a light south-westerly. It was still fine this morning although the wind was freshening.
