OBITUARY

MR. THOMAS GARLAND

Mr. Thomas Garland, whose death occurred at his residence, 39 Waipapa Road, Hataitai, in his eighty-eighth year, was a Wellington resident for nearly 70 years. He was a splendid example of the. best type of English tradesman, conscientious in his work as in everything else he undertook.

Born in Wolverhampton, England, Mr. Garland, at the age of 20, decided to live in the colonies. He landed in New Zealand in 1870, and was for some time in Central Otago. Those were the days of the gold rushes, but he felt there was little to be gained in that direction and so moved to Wellington, where he established himself as a master tinsmith in Molesworth Street. Business was brisk in Wellington North in those times. He was there in business for 40 years and became well known. Eventually, as a result of the development of the Courtenay Place area, he transferred his business to the site now ocupied by the Hope Gibbons building, and there he carried on his trade until about 1914, when he retired. Since then he had lived in Hataitai. ,

Mr. Garland was a foundation member of the Baptist Church in Wellington. He was associated with the church for over 50 years, since the time when its first place of worship .was in Lambton Quay.

Mr. Garland's wife pre-deceased him about eight years ago. His only daughter is Mrs. J. D. Hislop, of Hamilton.
