BRITAIN AND EGYPT
ATTACK ON TREATY
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, December 31,
Commenting on the debate <in the Egyptian Chamber of Deputies on the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty,. "The Times" draws attention to an attack by Ismail Sidky Pasha on Article 7 of the treaty, which provides that should either of the high contracting parties become engaged ih a war the other will immediately come to its aid in the capacity of ally.
"In this article," says "The Times." "Sidky Pasha described the ' danger that Egypt would have in taking sides in a dispute that might not concern her directly, and insisted that'the emergency clause tied Egypt's hands instead of leaving her free to decide her own course of action on the merits of the case. * - y
"This doctrine, so surprisingly enunciated ,by one of the authors of the treaty in 1936, was not to the liking of the Chamber, and a subsequent motion expanding his criticisms obtained only one vote."
