WOMEN'S CRICKET

WIN BY EIGHT WICKETS

WELLINGTON RETAIN SHIELD

By eight wickets, the Wellington women's representative cricket eleven retained the Hallybur ton-Johnstone Shield at the Basin Reserve on Saturday '-after an exciting finish against Canterbu*/. Wellington had a lead of one run against the southerners in the first innings, and Canterbury declared their second innings closed with 191 on for four wickets, leaving Wellington just over two and a half hours in which to make the runs. So. slow was the rate of scoring at times that Canterbury seemed to be in a safe position for a draw, but Hatcher and Harris, making a great stand for the third wicket, livened up towards the end and got the runs with 15 minutes to spare. -" Hatcher, who played excellent cripket, hit fourteen boundaries in, making 94 not out, and Harris, competently but at a slower rate, scored 54.
