PLAYED AT THE BASIN
WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY
The Brabin Shield cricket match between Wellington and Canterbury commenced at the Basin Reserve yesterday in fine weather. Tne wicket and outfield, were in first-class order. The match will be concluded today. At stumps yesterday Wellington in their first innings had scored 265. Canterbury had 146 on the board for the loss of five wickets. The teams are:—
Wellington.—X. Parkin, D. Alexander, M. Dentice, P. Rough, W. Coupland, C. Jarvis, I. Manley, G. Rabone, F. Mooney, J. Parker, L. Flanagin. Canterbury.—J. Wason, J. Reeves, P. Smith, J. Baxter, J. Rumbold, D. O. Masefield, A. Burgess, A. Callaway, R. E. Empson, W. Moriey, and M. Marshall.
Alexander and Parkin gave Wellington a good start by putting on 48 for the first wicket. With the total at 48 Parkin fell lbw to Marshall. Dentice then assisted Alexander to put on 31 for the second wicket. With the total at 79, Dentice was smartly . taken by Burgess-at mid-on off Marshall. P. Rough, and Alexander then came together in a fruitful partnership. After scoring 26 in quick time, Rough was well taken by Wason off Baxter. Three were down for 157.
Joined by W. Coupland, Alexander opened out on the bowling and ran to his century in 125 minutes. Shortly afterwards he played one from Marshall on to his wickets. The luncheon adjournment was taken with the score 157 for four wickets. ' '
Coupland and Jarvis carried the total tb 208, where Jarvis, who had scored 22, was caught by Rumbold off Reeves. A little later Coupland, who had reached 27, fell lbw to Burgess. Rabone failed to open his account. Manley and Mooney carried the score to 258, when Manley, who had scored 27, was stumped by Callaway off Marshall. The innings closed at 3.30 p.m. for a total of 265. CANTERBURY'S INNINGS.
Reeves and Wason opened Canterbury's first innings, and with 9 up Wason was smartly caught in the slips
by Coupland off Flanagin. Smith came next, and' the 50 came up in 33 minutes. With the total at 58, Smith's bright innings came to a close, Manley clean bowling him. Baxter joined Reeves, who, after having batted patiently for 55 minutes for 17 runs, was well caught on the long-on boundary by Flanagin. Three wickets were down for 68. Rumbold joined Baxter, who, with the total at 70, was bowled by Rabone. Masefield hit a couple off Rabone, but was bowled next ball. Burgess and Rumbold took the score along, and the pair were still together when stumps were drawn at 6 o'clock, the score then standing at 146 for five "wickets, Rumbold being 38 and Burgess 32.
