EARLY DAYS RECALLED

Memories of Auckland Trotting Cup contests of the earlier period were revived by the visit to Epsom this week of Mr. W. C. Hird, who was closely associated with the sport in Auckland for many years. Mr. Hird was the first horseman to win the Auckland Cup three times, a feat 'that has in more recent years been equalled by J. Bryce and his son, A. Bryce.

Mr. Hird's first success was in 1899 with Billy Wilson, who was a hot favourite, and won v by 100 yards. In 1904 he drove another favourite in Rebel Boy to victory, and his third win was in 1912 with Manderene, who at the same meeting won the Summer Cup. Manderene was the first horse to register 4min 40sec for the Auckland Cup.
