AUCKLAND MEETING
ROUND UP CONFIRMS FORM
(By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird. ) AUCKLAND, January 2. With brilliant weather, a large increase was recorded in the investments on the third day of the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting today. Defaulter carried his present sequence to seven by completing double without ever being m the least danger of defeat, and Round^Up con firmed his Auckland Cup form by going the point better in the a.k.v-. Handicap. RETURN TO FORM* Valspear staged a return to form when he won Sthe Ellerslie Handle^ and paid a price exceeding a quarter of a century. Miss Appellant tried to win all the way. but. Valspear was always handy and he came through iri the straight to score easily trom Inquisitor and Miss Appellant, with Full Hand running .on in fpyrth place. Poland and Devon did best ot tne others. HURDLES TO ROZEL. Rozel won the New Year's Hurdles easily at a satisfactory price 7™ 1™ led until the second to last fence, which he ran down, and Rozel ana Stansted then headed him. Little Briton was going well until he lost . his rider at the seven furlongs, Ki^eris did likewise and Small Boy fell at tbe same stage Pyrenees the favourtfe. failed to show any dash. -Er^"!? ran his usual gallant race for fourth. Shy fenced badly throughout. SCANDAL AGAIN FAILS. There was a fine finish in the Midsummer Handicap, with the favourite, Scandal, well beaten after having every chance and La Vie winning at doublefigure odds. Heroic Maid, Sir Lysander, and Scandal were first away, Pern losing a lot of ground. Heroic Maid led past the half-mile and into the straight, but she weakened to the last bit and La Vie just caught her Lady Fox was almost on terms, and Thurnavaals, Sir Lysander, Scandal, and King Dazzle followed. The winner ran up to her early promise. Lady Fox raced like a winner in the near future. A BRILLIANT EFFORT. Round Up registered .a briUfcnt effort in winning the A.R.C. Handicap easily, once again displaying nis marked partiality for the Ellerslie track. He had a beautiful run throughout, for once the field had taken up positions he was tucked in on the rails with Dictate and Knight of Australia carrying him along. -Passing the post the first time the last five, were Palmint, Arctic King, Mazir, Padishah, and Barrister. Turning into the straight for the last burst Dictate and Knight of Australia were just ahead of Round Up, Day Wind, Cheval de Volee, Willie Win, Gay Rose, Kelly, and Mazir, with the Naders then weakening. Round Up went through on the rails and he was never troubled to win most convincingly. Mazir followed him through and just^ had enough advantage to stall off the .finishing efforts of Arctic King-and Willie Win. Next home were The Buzzer, Gay Rose, Padishah, and Dictate. The winner could almost be said to outclassed his field, although- Mazir had tb come from a long way back. Arctic King also finished strongly frpm the rear and at the post he was travelling faster than anything else. Willie Win improved and The. Buzzer vtfas coming on again after drifting a bit in the middle Stages.,-y ■•' " . V ; '_r ' THE DEFAULTER DERBY. ; Defaulter duly won the Great Northern Derby but the finish was quite an interesting one, although rather flattering to the rest of-the field. Hot Box assumed the pacemaking role, with Defaulter trailing him, and Ihe rest of the field was never far away.-The first half-mile took 52 2-s'sec and the fir^t mile lmin 45 2-ssec. The field bunched making the home turn, and then Defaulter ran up to and disposed of Hot Box, Once in the van Defaulter was kept going, and while Beaupartir and Peerless challenged hotly he always had their measure. Old Bill, still •a maiden came from last at the three furlongs to be half a length behind the third horse, and Hot Box was handy. Gay Son and Philcourt were well biack. Defaulter set the seal on his fame. Beaupartir ran up tp spring form, and Peerless, who pulled very hard, also showed to advantage. BRILLIANT LATE BURST. A very long way back at the half mile, Lady Meath was not given much of a chance of winning the County Handicap, but she v came with such a great burst in the straight that she won by a head from Penzance and The Trimmer, with Melvanui; Pasture, Romani, and White Gold next. White Gold was again in trouble in the middle stages, and after making an effort on the rails in the straight she could not go on ..with it. The winner is Irish-bred and her winning effort was one of the outstanding performances of the'meeting. DOUBLE TO PALUSTRE, Palustre repeated her winning effort of the second day by capturing the Newmarket Handicap in a tight finisbh. Royal Bachelor was clear all the way to the straight, where he was attended by Palustre, Mon Acre, and Golden Sheila, with Llangollen heading the bunch. Several horses closed on Palustre after she had got to the front at the furlong post, and they staged a splendid finish, with Palustre hanging on to gain a head verdict over Anion, who finished very fast on the outside, and a head away was Golden Sheila, with Royal Bachelor and Paper Slipper right up. The rest were headed by Golden Blonde, Bachelor King, and Llangollen, the best of these being Bachelor King, who was hopelessly placed at the half mile. The winner is becoming more solid with racing.. ON THE WRONG NOTE. Backers finished the day as badly as they began, for an outsider in Respectful won the Glasgow Handicap at a price approaching a score. This was his first race for some time and an early return to form was not expected. Lornacre led acros the top and into the straight from Besiege, Respectful, and Whirling, with Trench Fight meeting trouble on the rail. At the 'half-dis-1 : tance Respectful ran past Lornacre and won convincingly. Lornacre held on to.beat Trench Fight and Surella, the last-named finishing with a lot of dash. Whirling, who had every chance, was next, and Pirate King, De Friend and the disappointing Marie's Acre followed.
