RISE OF 25 PER CENT.

Defaulter Wins the Derby

ROYAL STAR II AND LADY MONTANA ENJOY CUP SUCCESSES

(By "Rangatira.")

With every totalisator return showing an improvement on last « year's figures, in several instances the increase being substantial, the New Year stage of the holiday racing carnival in the Dominion was most successfully ushered in on Saturday and yesterday. The weather was generally much better than last year, when rain prevailed at the majority of meetings, but a rise of over 25 per cent, in aggregate investments was more than was anticipated. During the course of Saturday and yesterday no less a sum than £324,485 was put through the totalisators for the strictly New Year'meetings, as compared with £255,574 10s twelve months ago. The racing appears to have been keenly contested throughout the Dominion, with outsiders having rather the better say in the decisions than the favourite division. Defaulter, as expected, added the Great Northern Derby to his impressive record, and though this colt has not yet caught the public imagination as some champions of the past have done, it is becoming more and more apparent that he is in the class of Limerick, at least, and perhaps even that of Gloaming, Desert Gold, and Ajax.
