A SHARP SHOCK
CHIMNEYS DOWN IN MANAWATU
NO LOCAL DAMAGE
Preceded by a distinct runible, a sharp earthquake shock was felt at Palmerston North at 2.20 p.m. today. The shock ended with a decided upward jolt. A number of people , hurriedly left business and private buildings, but the shake was over by the time they got clear.
It is reported that a number of chimneys were shaken down between Bulls and Greatford. A plate glass window in the premises of the C. M. Ross Co. in the Square at Palmerston was broken, but there was no great dam-? age.
Wanganui reports a severe earthquake lasting several seconds
At 2.20 p.m. today a fairly sharp shock of earthquake was felt in Wellington. It was preceded by a rumbling sound, and a sharp jolt was followed by an undulating motion. The shake was of comparatively short duration and was over almost before any alarm could be caused.
Although good records of it were obtained at the Dominion Observatory, there has not yet been time to analyse them and to say where the origin of the disturbance was. It is estimated by at the Dominion Observatory that the intensity of the shake reached 6 on the Rossi-Forel scale..
But little alarm and no damage was caused in the city.
