CANTERBURY BATTING

ROBERTS A HALF-CENTURY

MODERATE SCORING

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, this Day

There was brilliant sunshine from c cloudless sky for the opening of the Plunket Shield cricket match between Canterbury and Wellington at Lancaster Park. The wicket was in splendid order and the outfield fast when Kerr won the toss for Canterbury and decided to bat. The teams are: — Canterbury.—J. L. Kerr (captain), W.,A. Hadlee, F. W. Bellamy, W. McD. Anderson, M. P. Donnelly, A. W. Robefts, R. E. J. Menzies, I. B. Cromb, R. C. Webb, H. Davis, E. Mulcock, D. N. Stokes- (twelfth man). Wellington.—E. W. Tindill (captain), J. R. Sheffield, H. F. Rice, J. Ell, W. Rainbird, J. A. Ongley, D. S. Wilson, N,Gallichan, T. L. Pritchard, J. Ashenden, J.. McJCeown,: T. .A. Harpur (twelfthman)... A QUICK WICKET. Pritchard opened the Wellington attack arid his fourth ball was snicked behind by Hadlee, Tindill taking a good catch. o—l—o. The start was similar to that made by Canterbury against Auckland.. The position improved after that, possibly on acebunt of a black kitten appearing on the field. Twenty runs were up in quick time, 10 runs coming from Pritchard's second over, including two 4's to Bellamy, who sent one ball flying over the heads of four anxious slip fieldsmen. The other was a lovely square cut., . . In Ashenden's second' over Bellamy punched one hard to the,off boundary and Kerr, who opened confidently, reached, double figures with a neat late cut off Pritchard. Both ' batsmen seemed to relish the bowling and hoisted 50 in half an hour. • With the iotal at 52 Bellamy paid the penalty for nibbling at rising off balls from Ashenden and was well caught by first slip. 52—2—29. Roberts filled the vacancy. . •. In Wilson's first over Kerr met s similar fate to Bellamy. He snicked one into slips and Ell took an 'easy catch. 66-^3—24. RECKLESS BATTING. Roberts and Cromb attempted to steady up Canterbury's rather reckless batting, but Tindill shrewdly put on the left-hander Gallichan and thwarted their plans. • . The-total had reached 91 when Cromb was beaten all the way by one of Gallichan's spinners. Donnelly began quietly but had a short life When he finely leg-glanced a scorcher from Pritchard, the wicketkeeper, Tindill, revealing: lightning anticipation, stepped across to take up a. magnificent one-handed catch. 104—5—3. •Roberts reached 20 by sound cricket, but at, 26 was dropped in the gully Wilson. Menzies and Roberts * added 26 to'the total before Roberts, who had just obtained 50 in 68 minutes, was beaten by a good ball from Ashenden.
