BRITISH EMPIRE
LAST YEAR'S GAINS
ANXIETIES OUTWEIGHED
"NO CAUSE FOR PESSIMISM"
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received December 30, 12.45 p.m.)
LONDON, December 29,
The Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chanjberlain, in a New Year message to Conservatives through the magazine "Home and Empire," rejects the contention that Britain's sole task is to prepare for war in the belief that war is inevitable.
"Last year's gains," he said, "far outweighed its trials and anxieties and have left no cause for pessimism. The re-armament plans so progressed, though much remains to be done, that we could discharge our obligations to our allies, the Empire, and ourselves. Our armed strength has enabled us to say that we can meet all peoples in a spirit of reasonableness, but not making concessions to force, while our social services have been maintained unimpaired."
