EGYPT ANXIOUS

TRUST .IN BRITISH TREATY

(Received December 30, 9 a.m.)

CAIRO, December 29,

The overwhelming majority by which the Address in Reply was carried in Parliament reflects the anxiety of politicians over Italian aspirations and their disinclination to substitute an Italo-Egyptian for the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty. There were only seven supporters to a Wafdist motion of no-confidence, and a Nationalist amendment opposing the treaty, with a provision for mutual support in the event of either being attacked, gained a solitary vote. The tenor of the speeches was that while the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty was not perfect, Egypt's geographical position, if nothing else, compelled loyalty to the treaty, especially in ;the face of fear that Egypt might become a battleground in the event, of conflict emerging *from tjie present tension.
