A RACE FOR RECORDS

The King's Plate, the title of which was changed from Islington Plate in 1923, is a race for making records. When Thespian defeated Gloaming in 1921 he ran the mile in lmin 36 3-ssec, which at the time made a New Zealand and Australian record, and the feat was equalled by Karapoti when he won in 1930. When Courtcraft won the race last year he reduced the New Zealand record to lmin 36sec, which stood until Smoke Screen scored his notable victory on Wednesday, in lmin 35 3-ssec. The course has been altered since Thespian's year, and it is probably a trifle faster now tnan in his day. The fast time this week was the result of Te Hero's setting a cracking pace over the first five furlongs in 59sec.

J. J. Waller has Aurora's Star and Airflow in at Marton. The former will be piloted by W. Jenkins, and the Bracelet candidate by Mr. H. J. Waller.
