THREE-YEAR-OLD WINNERS

Though the Manawatu Cup has never yet been won by a three-year-old, the same record does not pertain to the Wairarapa Cup. The race has a history dating back to 1897, and no less than six three-year-olds have been successful. , The first horse of the age to win was Sir Knox in 1912, and the following two years Obligant and Immer were also successful. After an interval of a year Taringamutu won again for the age, and the other two such winners have been Hynanna and Ring Boy, on January 1 and December 31, 1927, respectively. Hynanna carried 8.13. and gave away weight to the rest of the field. , . .. . The three-year-old in this year's contest is' Night Hawk, who won at Awapuni over nine furlongs and has been penalised to 7.7 tomorrow. Night Hawk showed at both Riccarton and Awapuni that he possesses good stamina, but in his second start at Manawatu he ran only moderately when a stiff pace was cracked on and the pace is likely to be solid again tomorrow.
