FOREST DANGER
LIGHTING OF FIRES
THREATS TO THE WAIPOUA
(Special to the "Evsninp Post")
AUCKLAND, *This Day,
The need for observing the regulation regarding the lighting of fires m State forest reserves was emphasised when Mr.'E. T. Frost, North Auckland representative of the Forest and Bird Protection Society, was touring through the Waipoua Forest. He came upon a group of four women;who had kindled a fairly large fire in a cutting rignt under a group of kauri trees on the road.
"A spark from a fire at this place carried by occasional guste of wind into the dry pukaha at the foot of the kauris might'have caused what would have been a national catastrophe,' Said Mr. Frost. This was the second fire he had noticed oh the same day in an unauthorised place, and the other One was only a few hundred yards away from a proper fireplace. The offender was a man. :
"It behoves, the authorities to keep a careful watch and the public to cooperate with them by acting as honorary rangers every time they enter the park," said Mr. Frost.
