JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 28. The first' cricket Test between England and South Africa was drawn. England, who made 422 in the first innings, declared the second innings closed at 291 for four wickets (Gibb 106, Paynter 100). South Africa, with 390 on the board for the first innings, required 324 for a win, and had made 108 for one wicket at stumps. England's overnight score was 103 for one wicket, the not out batsmen being Gibb (53) and Paynter (32). After a quiet opening Gibb and Paynter became more aggressive. Gibb reached his century in one hundred and eighty-four minutes and Paynter took five minutes longer.
