South Africa, with 390 on the board for the first innings, required 324 for a win, and had made 108 for one wicket at stumps. England's overnight score was 103 for one wicket, the not out batsmen being Gibb (53) and Paynter (32). After a quiet opening Gibb and Paynter became more aggressive. Gibb reached his century in one hundred and eighty-four minutes and Paynter took five minutes longer.
