SPORTSMAN PASSES
Charles Morbey, jockey, and later successful owner and backer, died m I October at his home at Soham, near Newmarket, at the age of 82 years, says an English exchange. . Mr Morbey made a fortune in betting, and it was said of him that everything he touched turned to gold. One of his heaviest bets was on his own horse, Red Eyes, who dead-heated \ with Cypria in the Cesarewitch of 1893. Another of his big winners was Csardas, who won the Royal Hunt Cup of 1904. His horses were trained for him by the late J. Cannon, father of Noel and "Boxer" Cannon. . , Mr. Morbey also took a keen interest in coursing, and was associated with the training of Waterloo Cup winners. As a jockey, his most famous ride was on Mr. P. Lonllards Parole. In 1879 Parole sensationally defeated in a race at Newmarket the famous Isonomy, who a few weeks later won the Ascot Gold Cup.
