THE RUSSIAN GAS PIT
It is complained that rumours from Russia are not what they used to be, writes f'B." to the "Manchester Guardian," but a recent article ;in" the "Transactions" of the. Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute -of, India contains ari account of activities at some collieries in the TJ.S.S.R. that are well up to the H. G. Wells standard. The idea of burning coal in its seams down below and piping the resultant gas to the surface has long been dreamed of in this country, but the Russians are.doing it* The article states that there are five such plants, one in full operation on/ a commercial basis. It is at Gorlovka, in the Donetz coalfield, and is said to be producing over half a million cubic feet of gas an hour, at a cost of less than sixpence a therm.
