"RUINED FOR LIFE" —,—♦- [THE EFFECTS OF A STEAK Many laymen must be familiar by this time with more or less authoritative pronouncements from medical experts about how long it takes the internal arrangements of the human body to work off a specified dose of alcohol, says the "Manchester Guardian." The time in hours may differ according to the amount of alcohol consumed, but there seems to be a general agreement that it does in due course disappear. As compared with drinktaking, it appears that flesh-eating may amount to a much more prolonged burden on the physical apparatus, for Sir Walter Langdon-Brown, Emeritus Professor of Physic at Cambridge, has been telling a London audience (as a derisive example of extreme views) that he once heard a physician (obviously a whole-hearted supporter of the vegetarian faith) "state that he believed a man never completely got over the ill-effects of eating a steak." It is terrible to think of a man handicapped for life just by one liberal, but incautious cut off the joint, or sowing the seeds of lifelong disharmony down below by a single visit to a grillroom. Alcohol seems evanescence itself when compared with the brutal burden of a solitary beef-steak that lingers for life like a dark cloud over the physical apparatus that rashly rushed it down. Still, many a meat addict must, in the course of his crass and carnivorous career, have encountered steaks that were undeniably tough. It would, however, be hard to find one that was tougher than the tale attributed to the medical enthusiast for a vegetarian diet.
