LAWN TENNIS

MORE SURPRISES

FAVOURITES OUT

(By telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. i Those who had hoped that the Canterbury ' lawn tennis championships would give a line on form for the Dominion tournament have been sadly disappointed, for surprise upsets have occurred every day, and today two more were added to the list when H. A- Barnett was eliminated and Angas, and Brown encountered a similar fate in the sen\i-final of .the doubles. The defeat of Barnett does not rank as a jinajor upset, but the ease ( with which the young Aucklander, J: W. Gunn, accomplished it astonished the gallery. Barnett was forced into errors' and he found that even his amazing retrieving ability could not stand the strain .of his opponent's attack. The youthful combination in Pattinson and Penfold carried on the work of upsetting file seeding committee's calculations today, for they defeated Brown and Angas, the favourites for. the men's doubles title, in a hard and at times i brilliant match. Conditions were unpleasant today, sweltering heat prevailing early this morning, and later a strong wind 'sprang up and rain clouds gathered. Results:— Men's: Singles.—Semi-finals: J. W. Gunn beat H;,A. Barnett, 6-4, 6-0. Men's Doubles.—Semi-finals: R. G. Pattinson and "C. F. Penfold beat C. Angas and A. D. Brown, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. J. W. Gunn and J. T. Mayson beat H. A. Barnett and A. R. Cant, 6-4, 6-4; •l Women's Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss D. Miller beat Miss M. Beverley, 6-1, 6-3. ' ' ■ :■ ■ ..- Girls* Doubles.-—Final: Misses D. Elsom and P. Cuddon beat Misses F. Fleetwood and C; .Chester. 6-2,, 64.
