STORM AT TRENTHAM

LITTLE GALLOPING

MISHAP Tfl ARCTIC KING

.(By "Eaaig'ataia;")

Only the very early birds found any nourishment at Irentbam .this morning. A little later there was such sustained torrential rain that the course was out of commission for all serious quests. The thunderstorm began shortly after 3 oteloek, and it was still thundering at 8 o'clock. The rain was heayy when the tracks were opened at 5 o'clock, but they were suitable for fast work till the deluge set in shortly after 5.30.

The "early birds" were H. A. Tfilford and. J- W... Lowe, who trotih managed to gallop their teams. The; only other-trainers- who -appeared at the course during the usual workinghours. were H. Pritchard, H. B. XiQragan, and "W. J. Wood, "but the storm was at its -height shortly after their arrival, and their .horses .finally had to be let «ofl with quick rounds of cantering.

Beaulivre (H. Duncan) had Telamon (C. Burgess) for -a*mate over nearly six furlongs the reverse way on the inside grass track, '-which .was greasy,, and he won the gallop .conxfortably by three, lengths. They .did .not start till well beyond the winning-post, where -most gallops -the reverse way are commenced, -lest they take fright at "the semaphore board,, and the only section that could lb£l:c§o<cfced -was the last three furlongs, wMdh was ■done in 41sec.

Beaulivre -will be taken to Ellerslie, by the stable .head lad,<H. Claut, who; had charge .of the luarses scnaae icaonths; back while Telfoxd was. in ihospital, and he will i>e ridden 3n the Eoal Stakes by JP. Atkins. 3Ss owner, Mr. W. Higgins, -is also travelling -rioiih to wltnessthe3a.ee. ■

Going the ordinary -way. Globe Trot*; ter (A. G. P. ■Newnnam) xan. half a anile' pleasingly in 52 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 39sec.

Accomplice id. Elood) did a smrkixxg \ gallop ower seven furlongs in Imini 38sec, the last baK-mile -in 54 "'3-ssec. Deßham (Newnhram) took lmin 35sec,: the last half-mile in 52sec. Sigurd (Burgess') was cantering 'Ms first three furlongs and took 57sec for the last half-mile.

J. W. Lowe's pair, Yours Tx.uly (L., T. TSfesbitt) and Punarua -(M. L. Hitchen), separately acan tnree furlongs < in 4Qsec. Sunee CNesbitt) did a -working mile in 2xcHn SSsec, and Good Sun<(Hitehen) took lmin .51 sac.

H. B- -Lorigan galloped his W-oodville pair, ITwenty -Grand snd War Cloud,, yesterday -morning, -wnen iihey ran five I ferlongs tpgether in lmin ssec. Thel iorraer will ibe ridden on Saturday by! W. J. Broughton and the latter by H. N. Wiggins. The .only other Trentham 1 horses now engaged at Woodville are. Quixnper and "Golden Tiawlc -Quimper will probably be ridden overweight again by V. Burgess.

Arctic King's absence from the Woodville acceptances is'^tie to an accident he suffered while .out doing road exercise last Sunday. Tte jstunibled1 and fell on the wet bitumen, .and Tie opened his near ioce knee, -wliicb iia.s filled, though it does not .now appear to be causing him any pain. lEs work is being continued., and if be goes <on all right he may after all toe raced at' Te Hapa on Saturday week as a preliminary to the Auckland Cup.

With S. Wilson definitely out-of action for some time, Arctic King isNanow :without a rider for the Auckland -Cup, but there should not "he any difficulty in securing a suitable pilot for this horse. It is probable that L. X Ellis will be offered the jnomit.

Barabbas, as a xesnlt. of iris, iall at Otaki last Saturday, will Ibe out of commission -for -several weeks, and he will now have to miss his holiday engagements. His anost serious injury -is a badly-bruised back, which be -received not in tne actual fall but when' SEfafi Ring subsequently galloped on -top of him. , Peerless is definitely to go to JSllersiie for the two final days' racing, -whene she will contest the »Great Northern Derby and the Clifford Plate, 'Whether she will be there for the JSang'-s Klate as well on the second day depends on the weight she receives in the Manawatu Cup. Favourably treated at A-w.a--puni, she will race there £rst and then travel to Ellerslie during t?he w.eek prior to the New Year.. Hex ELterslie rider is indefinite .at present .owing to the accident to ,S. Wilson, tut' tL. J. Ellis will ride her -if she runs iba the Manawatu Cup.
