CENTENNIAL EMBLEM

Sltf A. T. NGATA'S DISCOVERY

An error in the drawing of the design of the Centennial emblem was de- j tected by the Hon Sir Apirana Ngata, M.P.. when the design was submitted }to the National Centennial Council today, and an alteration is to be made. The «mbl.eia, which is in the form loi a double circle resting on an open book, wIQ 'be used for letter-leads and [similar purposes. The pages t>f the book carry the dates, 1840-1940, and between tine double circle forming the outside of the emblem are the words'"New Zea-

land Centennial" and an adaptation of Maori carving. The -inside of the circle is -divided foy a fern tree, on <one side of which is a sailing ship approaching a coast wihere a Maori stands before a whare, .and on the other a steamship and flying-boat' are approaching the same coast with a modern building and a large crane in th-e fereground.

When the -design was submitted to the council it won .general approval irom the European members, but the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata almost im-, mediately called attention to an error in fee drawing. The Maori -whar-e had its entrance placad in the middle direct-1 ly under -fhe gaMed iront, and Sir Apirana explained that the Maori architect always placed the entrance to one side. The design was -approved subject to the entrance to the whare being altered to the seorEeet position.
