VALUABLE OILFIELD
SOUTH GIPPSLAND
FURTHER TESTS AUTHORISED
(Received December 7. 9 a.m.)
CANBERRA, This Day,
Mr. J. McEwan, Minister of the interior, announced iri the House ot Representatives last night that the Commonwealth Oil Advisory Committee is convinced that there exists in the Lake Entrance district, South Gippsland, Victoria, a very valuable bed
of oil sand of considerable magnitude which is probably capable of being exploited commercially. He added that drilling had been proceeding in this district for some years, as a result of which oil had been produced, justifying further tests which the Government was authorising. It was estimated that there existed a bed of oil sand at least eight square miles in area, of a thickness of 20 to 40 feet, with a total oil content of not less than 150,000,000 gallons.
