WAGES CLAIMS

DOMINION DISPUTE

Discussions were commenced in conciliation council this morning between representatives of the workers and employers in the plumbing and gasfitting industries throughout New Zealand to arrange a Dominion award. The proceedings are expected to occupy two or three days.

The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. M. J. Reardon, presided. The applicant workers were represented by Messrs. J. Clark (Auckland), A. McConnell (New Plymouth), K. McKenzie (Blenheim), L. H. Bull (Nelson), R. Taylor (Christchurch), R. V. Collier (Dunedin), and F. C. Checketts (Invercargill). Mr. H. Thompson was agent. The employers were represented by Messrs. R. G. Speirs (Invercargill), R. Wainwright (Wellington), A. P. Hartnoil (Auckland), W. A. Jenkins (Dunedin), F, L. Home (Christchurch), R. Bell (Wanganui), and R. M. Saddington (Christchurch). Mr. J. B. Trudgeon (Christchurch) was agent for the employers.

The workers asked for a 40-hour week with work from Mondays to Fridays only. They asked for 3s 3d an hour, Is a day additional for men in charge of outside work, and 5s a week additional to journeymen as tool and overall allowance. Overtime was asked for at double time. Eight statutory holidays and two weeks' annual holiday on full pay were asked for.

The employers offered the terms of the old award with three minor amendments.
