CHAMPIONSHIP MEETINGS
Sports bodies throughout New Zealand are workin.' in harmony to provide events, including many championships, in Wellington during the Exhibition period.
The Centennia] committee early called a conference of sports bodies, who wholeheartedly agreed to make the Exhibition sport: programme as attractive as possible. It was unanimously agreed that all championship r.-jetings should be held in Wellington in 1940.
The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will hold its championship meeting' at the end of February, 1940. and it is hoped that some noted American athletes will compete.
The New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association will hold its championships on February 16, 17, and 18, 1940.
The New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association will hold its championship regatta on February 17, 1940, and the Interprovincial championship eights on Easter Saturday, March 23, 1940.
The New Zealand Basketball Association wli hold its championship tournament immediately after Easter, 1940.
The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association will stage the New Zealand tennis championships from December 29, 1939, to January 2, 1940, inclusive, and the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association will _>old the Wellington tennis championships from January 19 to January 22, 1940.
The Wellington Crickec Association's contribution will be the Plunket Shield match against Otago on December 24, 2.6, 27, and 28, 1939, and special matches will also be played on December 31, 1939. January 4, 1940, and oti the first Saturday in February, and the first Saturday in March.
The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association will hold races on January 17, 18, 19, 20, and 22, 1940, and a two-day regatta on January 20 and 22, 1940. The inter-university Easter tournament will be staged from Good Friday to the follo%ving Tuesday. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association will hold races on February 11, 13, and 15, 1940, and the annual harbour race on February 16 1940.
The New Zealand Golf Association will hold its championship tournament on the Miramar links probably in November, 1939. A. D. Locke, of South Africa, has promised to return to defend his open title, and it is hoped that Australian. American, and British professionals may be induced to compete.
The Young Men's Christian Association of New Zealand will hold indoor basketball championships in June, 1940, and gymnastic championships at Labour Day weekend, 1940. In addition, championships will be staged by the New Zealand Boxing Association, the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association, and the New Zealand Croquet Council.
The various sports bodies will conduct their own tournaments independent of the Centennial Exhibition Committee, but all parties should benefit, as the Exhibition will result in bigger gates, and the athletic championships will increase the attendances at the Exhibition.
