NATIONAL SERVICE
HINT ABOUT PROPERTY
POSSIBLE REGISTRATION
(Received December 7, 2.50 p.m.) LONDON, December 6.
Speaking in the House of Commons debate on national service, Mr. W. S. Cluse (Labour) said that if the people were told that Britain was preparing her defences against almost, certain attack within perhaps a short period there would be an outburst of voluntary effort.
Sir John Anderson, in reply to the debate, hinted that the registration of property as well as personnel may be necessary in the future. He stressed that there' was nothing in the scheme suggesting industrial conscription, and added that Sir Auckland Geddes, Director of Recruiting and Minister of National Service in the war-time, had proffered his assistance, which was gladly accepted. The debate, by arrangement with the Opposition, was adjourned sine die.
