SHIPS' ARRIVAL DELAYED

, High seas and poor visibility prevented three ships from entering the harbour for some hours yesterday, but they all came. into port last night.

The Waitaki, from' Sydney, arrived in Cook Strait early in the morning, but put in to Long Island, Queen Charlotte Sound, at 6 a.m., and remained there until noon. She missed the worst of the storm at her anchorage, and at noon proceeded slowly across the Strait, arriving at Wellington at about 7 p.m. . ' '.

The Trojan Star and the Port Huon, both from Auckland, also arrived in the Strait in the morning, but did not attempt to enter the harbour. They both headed towards the South. Island and hove-to until about midday. By the time they reached the Heads the weather had moderated considerably. The Trojan Star berthed about 6 p.m. and the Port Huon at 9 p.m.

Officers on the ships reported very high seas and a wind which reached full gale force. They could see little owing to the torrential rain.

The Awatea, which arrived at Wellington todaj' from Sydney, had heavy seas and ya strong south-south-west wind to contend with, and many of the passengers had an uncomfortable voyage.

The Tamahine's departure for Picton yesterday was postponed from 2.45 p.m. till midnight. The Rangatira and the Arahura were not affected.
