REFUSED TO PAY FARE

! For behaving in a threatening manner to a tramway inspector Walter Leonard Clark, a labourer, aged 43, was fined £1 and costs by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, and for refusing to pay his fare he was fined 10s and costs. Sub-Inspector D. A. McLean, said that the defendant boarded a car at 3.40 p.m. yesterday, and travelled to Courtenay Place from Lambton Quay without paying his fare, notwithstanding the fact that he was repeatedly asked for it by the conductor. When the tram reached Courtenay Place the conductor reported the matter, and Inspector Walker asked the defendant to pay. He refused to pay, and was put off the car. He then took his coat off and threatened the inspector with his fists. A constable gave evidence that the defendant was under the influence of liquor, but was not drunk. The defendant failed to appear to answer the charge.
