NEW ZEALAND BOUND
MOTOR-VESSEL STORM
BIG CONVERSION JOB
Making good progress in a heavy swell,, the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company's Storm, which has been converted from a coal-burner to a motor-vessel, was sighted about 60 miles out from Sydney at 9 o'clock on Saturday night from the Awatea, which arrived at Wellington this.morning. The Storm had then been about eight hours on the trip and Morse-sig-nals were exchanged between the two ships.
The sighting of the Storm had a special interest for Mr. T. F. Gibson, who was a passenger on the Awatea, since he is a director of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, and visited Sydney in connection with the conversion, said to be the biggest ever carried out in Australia or New Zealand. The Storm was fully loaded, said Mr. Gibson today, and was expected to reach Lyttelton on Saturday morning.
Built in 1920 by J. S. White and Co., Ltd., of Cowes, the Storm, which is of 749 tons, was first named the R|ver Wear. She has traded on the New Zealand coast for some years now and is well known on the Wellington waterfront. It is expected that the conversion to a motor-ship will greatly improve the Storm's performance.
