CLOTHING FACTORIES
ORDERS FALL OFF
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day
The staffs of several clothing factories in Christchurch have been severely reduced owing, it is stated, to a serious falling off in orders brought about by overseas competition. One company, which operates at capacity with a staff of 65, has reduced this number, to 25, and the remaining available work has been rationed.
The manager of one company said that importing firms had purchased end-of-season lines in Britain. ,These were placed on the market in New Zealand in competition with garments made in local factories. Because of the seasonal lag between Britain and New Zealand importers were able to purchase many lines at exceedingly low prices. The position, he said, was serious, and there was a danger that some of the smaller firms would be forced to close down.
