SIX WICKETS AND 104

M CGIRR'S "DOUBLE"

YESTERDAY BEATS TODAY

In a display that has rarely been exceeded on the Basin Reserve for clean, stylish cricket,' H. M. McGirr, former New Zealand representative, pulled the game out of the fire for the veteran players matched against a Wellington Cricket Association team, flogging the bowling and funning io 104 not out in. just over the hour. A large crowd was delighted with an exhibition that was like an oasis m a desert of club cricket, particularly as McGirr, in W.C.A.'s innings, had taken six wickets for 74. Another feature of the game was the play of F. W. Gilligan, formerly of Essex and now headmaster of Wanganui Collegiate • School, who, although he failed to score, kept wickets brilliantly, He was responsible for two dismissals, and only one bye in, 200 runs went past him. The veterans won by 62 runs. There were four performances that lifted W.C.A. into what appeared to be a safe position. Dv Chateau, before he was stumped by Gilligan, made a neat,. 36, Ward contributed a forceful 50, and Lamason and Dustin made 26 and 38 respectively. Christophersen, who retired from Kilbirtiie last season and only just qualified for the past players, struck his old form and went to 54 in quick lime, but it was McGirr who stirred the crowd. In one over, from Blun-. dell he hit five 4's, and when the innings closed he had hit fifteen 4*s and three 6's. A. W. Duncan, for W.C.A., took six wickets for 70. ANNUAL FIXTURE? j After the match the chairman of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association (Mr. J. H. Philiipps), who had organised the game, thanked the veterans for attending to show present-day players how to/make the bat hit the ball. He specially thanked Mr. Gilligan for accepting the invitation to take part in the match. Messrs. M. F. Luckie, president of the Wellington Cricket Association, C. A. Richardson, and C. G. Wilson also praised the brilliant all-round display which had been given by McGirr, and the masterly exhibition of wicketkeeping by Gilligan. Replies were made by Messrs, Brice, Gilligan, McGirr, and Duncan. Mr. Gilligan expressed thanks for the invitation to him to take part in the game. He hoped the fixture would be made an annual one and that he would be invited, again. Details: -r W.C.A. First Innings.
