MEETING AT HATAITAI
DIFFICULT CONDITIONS
The strong, gusty .northerly, coupled, with side eddies down the gullies, I which prevailed at Hataitai Park on j Saturday made conditions extremely difficult for athletes at the Wellington j Centre's inter-club scratch meeting. ] Fields were rather larger than at the opening fixture the previous Saturday1 and within the next few weeks the various events should be drawing fullstrength entries. Naturally the conditions interfered with performances, except in the sprints, where runners had the benefit of an assisting wind for most of the journey, but there were nevertheless several promising efforts. G. Quinn, national sprint champion, won the A grade furlong very handsomely from the Wellington representative footballer, W. J. Fulton, in 22 4-ssec—quite fair moving for the track. Fulton, however, did admirably in the broad jump, clearing 22ft and defeating E. Phillips, Wellington's best all-rounder, who found 20ft 9in the limit of his capacity on Saturday. Fulton might do very well as a broad jumper if he perseveres with the event. An unexpected competitor fin the two miles was W. Al. 9. Pullar, former New Zealand mile champion and Empire Games representative. Pullar, who is stationed in Masterton, was in Wellington for the day, not to run, but he sportingly turned out in borrowed gear. He made no race of his event, winning with the greatest of ease in 9min 59 4-ssec. The results are as follows: — Junior 220 yds.—A grade: J. Tracey (W.), 1; A. Cochrane (K.), 2. Time, 24 l-ssec.
