OLD PUPILS' DAY
HUTT HIGH SCHOOL
Old pupils' day at the Hutt Valley High School on Saturday was as successful as usual. Apart from those taking part, there was a good attendance of visitors, including a number of married ex-pupils and their children.
In the cricket, Old Boys A beat School Aby 85 runs. Old Boys made 215, made up as follows: —Roberts, 34; R. Muir, 13; E. Sissons, 14; F. Warnes. 4; M. Orr, 75 not out; E. Sargisson, 32; F. Foster, 4; R. Foster, 3; W. Sullivan, 0; C. Heald, 5; M. Church, 15; extras. 16. For School R. Kennedy bowled well, taking six wickets for' 38 runs. School made 130, the best scorers being H. Jaeger 42 and O. Murray $2. M. Church took five wickets for 16 runs.
In the B match, Old Boys beat School by 52 runs. Old Boys in the first innings made 113 (W. Jarvie 58, retired, N. Larson 21, H. Jones 20 not out), and in the second innings 61 for five wickets, declared. For School. S. Jaeger took four wickets for 47 runs and O'Reilly four for 20. School in the first innings made 76 and in the second 46. Bowling for Old Boys. Grant took five wickets for x ll runs, and Veale four for 8, including the "hat trick."
In the tennis matches, the school girls beat the old girls' team by seven games to one. Detailed results are as follows, the school being first: —
M. Mitchinson and P. Campbell beat M. Green and M. Halliburton, 9-2; P. Longton and D. Longton beat H. Guiness and P. Campbell, 9-4; B. Campbell and P. Dudding beat E. Davies and O. Pope, 9-4; J. Hunter and M. Marwick lost to N. Whiteman and M. Shearer, 8-9; D. Pegler and M. Jack beat K. Slater and M. Egglestone, 9-2; N. Huse and R. Gartside beat J. Dent and L. Butler, 9-8; D. Dowland and B. Mackisack beat S. Lowry and P. Gardner, 9-3; N. Butt and M. Cameron beat I. Lochhead and Y. Banks, 9-4.
The present boys beat the old boys by four games to three. Detailed results are as follows (school mentioned first): —Wesley and Jarvis beat W. Clegg and N. Shearer, 9-5; Gillingham and McKay lost to S. King and A. James, 7-9; Marsden and Rendle lost to E. Jones and E. Shearer, 5-9; Wood and England lost to McFarlane and D. Wilson, 7-9; Perry and Woods beat McLennan and J. Wilson, 9-4; L. King and F. James beat Dobson and J. Butt, 9-7; King and Okeby beat V. Reynolds and M. Rose, 9-8.
In the relay races, the present pupils won comfortably from the old pupils. The teams were as follows: —Old pupils: A. James, E. Collins, H. Hodge, and G. Burton (old boys), and M. Beattie, J. Beattie, M. Green, E. Oliver, M. Sharon, P. Gardner, V. Stratton, and E. Robinson (old girls). School: H. Potter, H. Jaeger, D. Turner, and R. Stanton (boys), and J. Hunter, N. James, D. Pegler, and M. Marwick (girls).
In shooting the old boys' team beat the school team by 259 points to 222. The teams were as follows: —Old boys: T. Hargreaves, E. Hunt, 35. King, D. Palmer, R. Harding, A. Bornholdt, G. Patrick, V. Castle. School: ITatusch, Marshall, Wilson, Weggery, Evison, Lawrence, Marwick, Wong.
