EXPLOSION IN MINE
DEPUTY BADLY BURNED
THE MORNING INSPECTION
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
GREYMOUTH, This Day.
Shock and severe burns to the face, head, back, arms, and legs were suffered by Lewis Smithson; aged 45, of Runanga, in an explosion in Hunter and party's co-operative coalmine at about 7.30 yesterday morning.
Smithson, a married man, carrying out the duties of examining deputy, was inspecting the mine prior to the men commencing work. Suddenly an explosion occurred, apparently caused by the presence of gas, for which Smithson was making the customary test with a lamp. He was attended to medically and admitted to the Grey Hospital.
In spite of his severe burns and the extinguishing of his lamp, Smithson made his way out to the mine mouth.
