EUROPEAN WAR
ITALIAN ATTITUDE
"STRONG OPPOSITION"
(Received December 3, 10 a.m.)
LONDON, December 2
The "Manchester Guardian" declares that Count Ciano, the Italian Foreign Minister, was untruthful when he stated that Italy had secretly mobilised in September. On the contrary, Signor Mussolini and Count Ciano wanted to mobilise, but King Victor Emmanuel and the public, especially in Northern Italy, where there was strong opposition to participation in a European war, prevented it.
A message from Rome, published yesterday, stated that Count Ciano had revealed for the first time that, during the Czech crisis, Signer Mussolini informed Herr Hitler that in the event of a general war Italy would aid Germany, as she would feel herself menaced.
