In the eastern districts there is a considerable Russian population, and on Lake Ladoga, the largest European lake, a Russian monastery. Two monks from this mo nastery are shown above.
Timber is Finland's chief export. Cut in the winter and placed on the ice of frozen rivers, it floats down to stations where the logs are sorted after the ice thaws. Here is a picture of a log-sorting station.
