NOTES

Keen, fighting- cricket was the order of the day in Wellington last Saturday. Karori made a great fist of their uphill battle, and there were some exciting moments in the concluding stages —first, when an appeal for a catch was answered in the negative, and later when a none-too-confident appeal for lbw was, just as surprisingly, upheld.

.Wellington tried their hardest to get full points from Kilbirnie, and in the process Ell brought off one of the greatest catches' that have been taken in the slips. However, Kilbirnie held out. University went closer to an outright win against Wellington College Old Boys, who had only two wickets intact at the finish.

A thorough combing of the colleges would bring to light some extremely good cricketers in the making. There is always a keen look-out for bowlers, and it is considered that in Larkin, of Rongotai College, there is a "find." Able to make the ball turn both ways, this young player should come well into the cricket picture as he develops.

Stephenson (University) is going to trouble quite , a lot of batsmen this season. He had Old Boys in difficulties last Saturday. Four for 31 and three for 10 are figures which speak for themselves. Harpur, of the same team, is impressing as a slow spin bowler.

The English tour has brought Ben. Barnett on as a batsman. Back in Melbourne, he hit up 128 in quick time. Jack Badcock was also on the job in Adelaide the same day—l 42 in 163 minutes.

Due back from India shortly, Clarrie Grimmett is expected.to be available for South Australia's first Sheffield Shield match—with New South Wales, commencing on December 16.

A notable omission from South Australia's playei's for practice in view of Sheffield Shield engagements is Vie. Richardson. It would appear that Richardson has now given up first-class cricket. In any case, he is giving wireless talks on current cricket.

Coming well into the cricket limelight is C. Christ, the Queensland slowmedium left-hander, as also is G. Baker as a batsman. The pair played a big part in putting Queensland well on top of New South Wales in the first of this season's Sheffield Shield matches.

Wanganui's representative match with South Taranaki has been postponed indefinitely from the scheduled date of December 17. Club games will be played instead on that day, and the rep. fixture a little later.
