FIFTY YEARS AT BAR

A. C. HANLON, K.C.

MAN OF WIDE INTERESTS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, December 2. Mr. A. C. Hanlon. X.C, will next Thursday complete his fiftieth year at the Bar.

A full and varied life in the profession in which he holds an undisputed place lies behind him, and he will have the congratulations and good wishes of hundreds of his colleagues all over the Dominion o.i the attainment of his jubilee. The art of pleading was always his, and he stands today admitted by colleagues and opponents alike to be one of the finest advocates the Dominion Courts of Law have seen.

The accents of his expert pleading have resounded virtually from end to end of the Dominion. He defended a Chinaman charged with murder at Three Kings in the far north, and appeared in a nautical inquiry at Bluff. His practice has covered a wide field of advocacy, but his most notable triumphs have been in capital charges and the Divorce Court.

Apart from his profession Mr. Hanlon possesses a diversity of interests wider and more general than those of most men. Many forms of sport, but specially racing (he is president of the Dunedin Jockey Club), yachting, golf, and boxing have engaged his interest and attention, his outstanding gifts as an elocutionist have formed expression through his association with the Dunedin Shakespeare Club, and he was also one of the foundation members of the Dunedin Competitions Society. He was born in Dunedin and his regard for his native town is illustrated by the fact that, in spite of numerous attractive offers of partnerships in northern centres, he has spent the whole of his 50 years in the practice of his profession in this city. j
