BY FOUR WICKETS

COUNTRY BEAT TOWN

TIDE TURNED BY CAPTAIN

A fine fighting innings by W. E. JNorris, of Manawatu, when Country had lost six wickets for 67 and were still short of a win by 42 runs, turned the tide in favour of Country yesterday afternoon at the Basin Reserve, and Town were beaten by fourj wickets. It was a real captain's innings. .Norris went to the crease when, there were all the indications of an exceedingly close finish, if not a victory for Town; he played himself in carefully, took the sting out of the attack, and finished with 54 not out, almost half the runs necessary for a win. Connor, 15 not out, kept his wicket stubbornly intact while his partner found the gaps in the field. Needing 109 runs, Country's first five wickets could muster only 41, O'Neill, Parsloe, and McKeown doing the damage. The success keyed up Town, and when Norris went in the fieldsmen were on their toes; but with steady defensive work and great patience he let the runs come rather than chasing them. He excelled particularly with pretty-turns to leg, and had a nice grassy drive through the covers. His total included only four 4's. O'Neill and Parsloe both bowled well, taking two for 18 and one for 34 respectively, and McKeown, with two for 32, often had the batsmen tied up. Details:— TOWN.
