SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

A depression with a considerable northward extension has now begun to cross the southwestern portions of the country, and the anticyclone lately covering the northern portions is moving away eastwards. Apart from moderate north-easterly sea breezes on the eastern coasts yesterday, moderate northerly winds have prevailed and have become strong today at places about and south, of Cook Strait. Rains have commenced over the south-western districts of the South Island. Yesterday warm and cloudy conditions prevailed with some patches of mist and a few light local rains in western districts, but with fair weather in eastern areas.- Fog has continued throughout the twenty-four hours on parts of the Otago coast.
